What do the results of the scan mean?

The results of the scan will be interpreted by the Specialist Vascular Nurse who will advise one of the following:

Normal Aorta - Normal Popliteal Arteries
If both the aorta and the popliteal arteries are normal, this will be explained and a report will be given to the patient - and a copy sent to the GP for the patients records.

Enlarged Aorta and/or Popliteal Arteries
If the aorta and/or the popliteal arteries are enlarged, the patient will be advised to undergo further scanning after a certain time - to see if the enlargement is continuing to become an aneurysm. The length of time between scans depends on the size and shape of the aneurysm - the advice may be a further scan in 3, 6 or 12 months.
There is no requirement for the next scan to be at The Whiteley Clinic - we will be happy to send the results to another unit if the patient wishes.
If the patients wishes us to continue the surveillance, we will book the repeat scan at the patient's convenience.

Aneurysm of Aorta and/or Popliteal Arteries
If an aneurysm is found, a referral to a Vascular Surgeon will be advised.
The GP will be informed and the results will be made available to whichever Vascular Surgeon that the GP and the Patient wishes to be referred to.
If the patient and their GP wishes, or if an urgent opinion is needed, The Whiteley Clinic has specialist Vascular Surgeons on hand who will be happy to see the patients and advise them on treatment.
